    This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 048. The data were obtained from the Great Australian Bight and off SW Western Australia in April 1979. Four hydrological transects and two XBT transects were carried out.     This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 037. The data were obtained from the Bass Strait and NSW coast in September 1978. Data were obtained from acoustic and trawl surveys of Jack mackerel (Trachurus declivis) and other demersal and pelagic fish including pilchards, anchovies, yellowtail and juvenile nannygai. Length, numbers, weight and target signal strength were determined. XBT data from thirteen stations were also obtained on this cruise.     This record describes the datasets obtained on Courageous Cruise 039. The data were obtained from the NSW coast and Tasman Sea in October 1978. Data were obtained on distribution (sightings and sonar) of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii). Associated data collected included seabird species composition and spatial distribution, plankton samples, XBT, zooplankton and hydrological samples, and water colour.     Biological data collected by FV Rehua during the transit from NZ to Devonport. Samples were collected with MIDOC net fitted to commercial trawl nets. In June 2009 scientific sampling of the Tasman Sea micronekton was carried out from a 65 metre factory freezer vessel, the FV Rehua, The voyage took place from Nelson New Zealand on the 17th 2009 June arriving in Devonport (Tasmania), Australia on the 22th June 2009. During the five day transit the vessel was under charter from Petuna Sealord to CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research for a total of 24 hrs. The charter time was approximately divided into eight three-hour deep-water deployments that formed three sets of day/night experiments. Three main sampling instruments were used: (1) Sampling of micronekton (primarily biota < 20 cm) was made from 1000 m depth to the surface in 5 sets of equally spaced (200 metre) strata using a fine-mesh multiple opening closing net system (MIDOC). This system was fitted to either the vessel's midwater or demersal commercial net. (2) The digitised return signal from the vessel's 38 kHz Simrad ES60 echosounder was logged for the duration of the voyage. This will allow us to map the along-transect acoustic reflectivity at 38 kHz of the Tasman Sea basin from the surface down to 1500 metres. (3) An Acoustic-Optically System (AOS) was attached to the headline of the demersal net to measure the acoustic reflectivity of individual biota at two frequencies (38 and 120 kHz) and record concurrent optical images using digital SLR still cameras and PAL video system. The AOS was deployed vertically down to 1000 metres depths on two occasions. On four occasions it was attached to the headline of the demersal net that had been fitted with the MIDOC cod-end.

This cruise took place in the east Indian Ocean during 10 January - 7 February 1987, under the leadership of Tim Davis. Biological data collected on this cruise include a large number of scombrid larvae (particularly southern bluefin tuna) for biological studies and information on the vertical distribution of the larvae. Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples to investigate the plankton variability. Three tuna from troll fishing and a collection of tuna of all species for scanning and transmission electron microscopy.     This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Soela cruise SO 8/87. This cruise took place in the east Indian Ocean during 4 November - 15 December 1987, under the leadership of Tim Davis and J. May. Biological data collected on this cruise include abundance and growth rate of southern bluefin tuna larvae from a total of 240 stations. Information on the vertical distribution of the tuna larvae in relation to the thermocline. Tuna larvae samples to study the relation between food availablity and abundance, diet and growth. Specimens for electrophoresis and 169 tuna larvae were identified and their pigment distribution mapped. One tuna was caught from light trap tests, the catches being mainly stomatopods (crustaceans) and myctophids (lanternfish).
